Juan Carlos Serrano is one the advisors at USP. He did us the honor of answering a few questions about himself. Juan Carlos has a similar story to some of the USP students. He was a tennis player in Mexico and then came to the United States to attend college at South Carolina State University. He actually achieved a full scholarship to play tennis in college and completed a Double Major in Economics and Agribusiness. He really enjoys working at USP helping others achieve the same dream he had as a young man. USP: Tell us about your background. Where are you from? Where did you grow up?

Juan Carlos: I grew up in Mexico City. I started playing tennis in a golf club. As I got better, I moved to a tennis academy in the city. I then trained for a year at Nick Bolletieri Tennis Academy in 10th Grade. I finished Highschool in Mexico. 

USP: Where did you go to college?

Juan Carlos: I attended South Carolina State University were I played 4 years on a full scholarship with a Double Major in Economics and Agribusiness. 

USP: Who has been your strongest influences in life?

Juan Carlos: My role model is my Dad because of his discipline as a person and as a business man. His integrity, empathy and honesty have been a big inspiration to me.

USP: What led you to this career? How did you end up at USP?

Juan Carlos: I wanted to make a difference in my community and with my kids by helping them reach their full potential and seek an opportunity in College sports. I approached different recruitment companies but USP is the one Company that has strong values that I want to transmit in my community and they have a great personalized and successful program.

USP: How long have you been at USP and what has been your proudest experience since working with us?

Juan Carlos: I have been in USP for 1 year and 3 months. Just seing the great impact when you sign the kids with the school that will forever change their lives is a great feeling of accomplishment for me as an advisor and father.

USP: What is the main mistake you see in the recruiting process?

Juan Carlos: The main mistake is that families think that this is an overnight process and usually look at someone else's process instead of focusing on their own. Families have to understand that it is a long but great process.

USP: Is there any student or client that you've worked with that has had a lasting impression on you?

Juan Carlos: Yes, Mauricio Treviño. He literally cried of joy when we signed his NLI. That is when I realized what a great positive impact USP and us as advisor make in families lives.

USP: What is your most important advice for a student and for the parents?

Juan Carlos: I would say to set up short term goals of 3 to 4 months, then set up 3 year goals, then 5 year goal, and then plan to execute it with reverse engineering. This is a marathon, not a sprint race.
